FAQs

Still have questions?

From 18 February 2027, all LMT batteries, industrial batteries with capacity greater than 2kWh, and electric vehicle batteries placed on the EU market must have an electronic battery passport as per Article 77 of the EU Battery Regulation.

Battery passports must include information set out in Annex XIII covering: battery model details, individual battery information, usage data, carbon footprint, recycled content, material composition, and dismantling instructions. Access is tiered between public, regulator-only, and legitimate interest parties.

Three access tiers exist: (1) Public information accessible to all, (2) Information accessible only to notified bodies, market surveillance authorities, and the Commission, (3) Information for parties with legitimate interest such as repairers, remanufacturers, second-life operators, and recyclers.

For batteries that undergo re-use, repurposing, or remanufacturing, a new battery passport is created and linked to the original passport(s). The responsibility for maintaining accurate passport data transfers to the new economic operator. When a battery becomes waste, responsibility transfers to the producer or waste management operator.

Battery passports must be accessible via QR code linking to a unique identifier compliant with ISO/IEC 15459 standards. All data must be in open, interoperable formats that are machine-readable, structured, and searchable, with no vendor lock-in.
